ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE CIRCUS PROJECT BOARD OF DIRECTORS
After a difficult and painful decision-making process, we regret to announce The Circus Project Board of Directors approved a resolution on July 19, 2022 to close the nonprofit. Thorough review and analysis of the financial situation revealed a continued decline in funds over the past several years, in part due to an increase in rent and facilities, expanded programming, and instability from the Covid-19 pandemic.
This decision is difficult to make. The Board explored numerous options in hopes of continuing The Circus Project’s 14-year history, and found dissolution to be the only responsible option. The Board is committed to a thoughtful and orderly closure process that prioritizes the well-being of current students and staff, and focuses on a transparent winding down of operations.
August 31, 2022 will mark the last day of programming at The Circus Project, and the intent is to formally close by September 30, 2022. The Circus Project is in communication with other local circus organizations and nonprofits in order to steward student and staff transitions with the most support as possible.
We are very proud of all that The Circus Project accomplished through its lifespan as an organization. Oregon Governor Kate Brown said, “The Circus Project is the kind of innovative organization that puts Oregon on the map as a destination for arts and culture.” Founded in 2008 by Process-Work therapist and circus performer Jenn Cohen, The Circus Project grew to become a leader in social circus and in the development of contemporary circus as an artform.
